Valtellina, in the heart of the Alps, offers cyclists three of the world’s most famous bike routes—Stelvio, Gavia, and Mortirolo—“the three legendary climbs.”

Valtellina is one of the most renowned Alpine areas in Europe for mountain biking, with routes suitable for all tastes and skill levels. The “Five Crazy Downs” are spectacular MTB descents that drop from the high peaks of Valtellina and Valposchiavo (Switzerland) down to the valley floor along dirt roads, mule tracks, military roads, and specially marked trails for bikers.

A route of over 160 km divided into eight stages, touching many Marian shrines in Sondrio Province, including the Madonna di Tirano Sanctuary—one of the most important religious monuments in Valtellina—and the Grosotto Sanctuary.

Grosio Rock Engravings Park

Visit the two medieval castles—Castello di San Faustino (10th century) and the “New Castle” (Visconti Venosta Castle, 14th century). Enjoy a guided tour of the spectacular “Rupe Magna,” the largest engraved rock in the Alps (5,500 engravings). Step back in time and take in a special view of the valley.

The so-called Gaudì Castle of Grosio is more like a private garden built on a rock.

It features 207 steps, sculptures, fountains, paths, caves, engraved phrases on the rock, strange objects, and colorful vases.
